The New 2027 Volkswagen Atlas: More Tech, More Style, and the Most Powerful Atlas Ever

The redesigned 2027 Atlas brings a 15-inch screen, a near-luxury cabin, and 282 hp — and Quirk VW of Manchester (21) and Braintree (18) hold the deepest 2027 Atlas selections in New Hampshire and on the South Shore. We counted all seven area VW dealers.

The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is the first all-new Atlas since the nameplate launched — new platform, new sheetmetal, a cabin that reviewers keep comparing to luxury brands, and the most horsepower ever fitted to an Atlas. It went on sale this month, and the early inventory race in New England has a clear leader: Quirk Volkswagen of Manchester holds 21 of the new 2027s, the most at any Volkswagen dealer in New Hampshire, and Quirk Volkswagen of Braintree holds 18, tied for the deepest 2027 Atlas selection on the South Shore. Between them, Quirk's two stores account for 39 of the new model. Here is what changed, what quietly didn't, and who has the trucks.

Style: the redesign is the real story

Every panel except the roof is new. The 2027 Atlas stands more upright and geometric than the rounded first generation, with double-stacked LED headlights, a full-width front light signature, an illuminated VW badge on most trims, and a flush tailgate with a full-width rear light bar. Three new colors (Blackberry, Sacramento Green, Sandstone) and new 20- and 21-inch wheels finish the outside. Inside is where reviewers land hardest: a completely redesigned cabin with real wood trim standard across the lineup, soft-touch materials replacing the old model's hard plastics, and backlit perforated door panels. Detroit Free Press critic Mark Phelan wrote that the interior "feels more like a Lexus than a Toyota or Honda." On looks, inside and out, this is a genuinely different vehicle from the 2026.

Tech: a bigger screen, smarter assists, and the return of the knob

The infotainment screen grows from 12 inches to a 15-inch display on SE with Technology and above — roughly 90 percent of the lineup — with a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro standard on every trim. That 15-inch screen out-sizes the 12.3-inch displays in the Telluride, Palisade, and Grand Highlander. New for 2027: a generative-AI voice assistant, dual wireless phone chargers, seven USB-C ports, and a Driver Experience Dial on the console that handles volume, drive modes, and ambient lighting themes — a physical control where the old model's touch slider used to frustrate everyone. IQ.DRIVE, already standard, gets smarter: Travel Assist can now change lanes when the driver initiates it, Emergency Assist can steer an unresponsive driver's Atlas to the shoulder and stop it there, and a new front center airbag brings the count to seven.

Power: the most powerful Atlas ever — with an asterisk

The new EA888 evo5 2.0-liter turbo makes 282 horsepower, the most ever in an Atlas — more than the old VR6, and 13 more than the 2026's 269 — and fuel economy improves up to 2 mpg (AWD: 20 city / 27 highway / 23 combined). The asterisk: torque is actually down, 258 lb-ft against the old car's 273, the new Atlas is about 150 pounds heavier, and MotorTrend's instrumented test recorded a slower 0–60 time than the outgoing model. It is also not the class power leader — Chevrolet's Traverse makes 328 hp as standard, and the Kia and Hyundai hybrid three-rows make 329. The fair claim, and it is a good one: the highest-output Atlas Volkswagen has ever sold, in a class where it sits mid-pack on power and near the front on everything electronic.

What the redesign does not fix — said plainly

There is no Atlas hybrid, and VW has only confirmed one for a midcycle refresh around the 2029–30 model year — while Telluride and Palisade hybrids are on sale now at up to 35 mpg combined. Volkswagen's warranty is 4 years / 50,000 miles against Kia and Hyundai's 10 / 100,000. The base SE tows only 2,000 pounds; the headline 5,000-pound rating requires SE with Technology or above with the factory hitch. And the Traverse beats the Atlas on both standard horsepower (328) and standard screen size (17.7 inches). Buy the Atlas for the cabin, the tech, and the design — not for a spec-sheet sweep.

Who has them: Quirk leads the 2027 count

We counted every new Atlas on the live inventory pages of seven area Volkswagen dealers on October 12, 2026. The pattern is consistent in both states: the Quirk stores stocked the new model deepest. In New Hampshire, Quirk Volkswagen of Manchester's 21 new 2027 Atlases are the most in the state — ahead of AutoFair Nashua's 19, Portsmouth's 11, and Rochester's 8 — alongside 17 remaining 2026s, for 38 new Atlases in total. In Massachusetts, Quirk Volkswagen of Braintree's 18 new 2027s tie Coastal Volkswagen of Hanover for the deepest 2027 selection on the South Shore, and are double Nucar Norwood's 9. One nuance worth knowing: part of Manchester's count is still arriving — 11 of its 38 Atlases are badged in transit, due end of October into early November — so call ahead on a specific unit.

Counts are new Atlas (three-row) only, from each dealer's live inventory page on October 12, 2026; Atlas Cross Sport is a separate model and is not included. Totals include in-transit units where the dealer's page includes them.

The 2027 Atlas in brief

Four trims: SE from $41,610 ($43,135 with destination), SE with Technology, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line at $58,135 with destination. Seven seats standard, six with the available captain's chairs. Cargo space is 21.2 cubic feet behind the third row and 95.4 maximum. Every trim gets the 282-hp turbo four and an 8-speed automatic; 4Motion all-wheel drive is available throughout and standard on the SEL trims. Two years of scheduled maintenance are included — a genuine ownership plus in a class where the Koreans win on warranty length instead.

Our take

The 2027 Atlas earns its redesign: the styling is sharper, the cabin is a class above the old car, the screen and driver-assistance tech jumped a generation, and 282 horsepower makes it the strongest Atlas yet — even if torque, testing, and the class leaders keep it honest. If you want to see one in person this month, the deepest selections are at the Quirk stores: 21 in Manchester, the most in New Hampshire, and 18 in Braintree, tied for the most on the South Shore — 39 of the new model under one group's roof. Just confirm your specific unit has landed before you drive over, because a slice of that count is still on the truck.
